Here is some information about me for anyone who would like to know who I am and what my qualifications are to author a web site about llamas. Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any other questions or concerns.I am part of Graceful Legend Llamas in Barnesville, Maryland. We have had one gelding as a pet/sheep guard since 1987 and have been raising llamas since 1992. I have had a fascination with llamas since I was 12 years old and it has done nothing but grow. I grew up raising sheep on a small farm. I participated in 4-H as a member for 10 years and as a Junior Leader for 2 more. I learned to train many animals during that time. I have halter trained sheep, cattle and llamas. I have also trained dogs and am currently working on earning a CD (obedience title) for my own dog.
I was an Animal Science major and in May 1994 I earned my Bachelor of Science from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. I learned a great deal about nutrition while I was there. It has enabled me to formulate my own feed for our llamas. During college and part of vet school, I worked with at Poolesville Veterinary Clinic. I learned many things about veterinary medicine while I was there. I got to see dogs, cats, sheep, goats, llamas, horses and cattle while working there.
I earned my DVM and became a veterinarian when I graduated in 1998 from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine which is at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. In October of my senior year, I will be spent 3 weeks seeing camelids with Dr. Paul Jones at Woodburn Veterinary Clinic in Oregon. I work at Peachtree Veterinary Clinic in Beallsville, Maryland. It is a private practice where I see mostly small animals (dogs and cats) and a few llamas and alpacas as patients.
I chose to author Llamapaedia because I had access to someone with the computer skills to create a good quality web site (Derek) and I felt there was a need for this type of site. There were no sites with practical objective information on management for someone who already owned llamas or who was seriously considering purchasing them. There are not even a lot of books that pull many sources of information into a single comprehensive set of information. Other sites were set up to provide lists of information for owners and very basic information for the public. I have worked and continue to work hard to provide the most accurate practical information in one place that I can with the amount of time I have available.
